Matthew Hansen

Matthew Hansen is a managing editor at the Buffett Early Childhood Institute. At the institute, he will create a news source that publicizes the early childhood education and care work being done in Omaha and Nebraska while also educating the public about early childhood issues.

Hansen was previously a metro columnist at the Omaha World-Herald. He worked in newspapers for 16 years, traveling to Cuba and Afghanistan and winning multiple state, regional and national awards for investigative stories, feature stories and columns. He was the 2015 Great Plains Writer of the Year. 

Hansen is a native of Red Cloud, a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the son of a retired early childhood education teacher and administrator. He's married to Sarah Baker Hansen, the World-Herald's food critic. Together they co-authored a 2017 book about Nebraska, “The Better Half.”
