Janette Merkel joined the Buffett Early Childhood Institute in 2015 as a program specialist, overseeing educational facilitators as part of the Superintendents’ Plan. The Florida native previously served as an ESOL instructional trainer coach and intervention teacher in Land O’Lakes, Fla., and as a literacy coach and dual-language program teacher for the Boston Public Schools. Earlier, she was an educational consultant, doing curriculum development and training projects with Harvard College and the Harvard Graduate School of Education and designing and teaching college-level child development courses in English and Spanish for the Child Care Circuit in cooperation with Salem State College and the Massachusetts Department of Education. She also taught Kindergarten and first grade in Corona, Calif., and was a graduate teaching assistant and curriculum lab graduate assistant at the Eliot Pearson Children’s School at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in child development and a master’s degree in education. Merkel earned an education specialist degree in educational leadership and policy studies and educational administration from Florida State University.
